The suburb counted 3148 dwellings at the last census, the great majority detached houses, and nearly every one runs a mix of old washer taps and newer mixers. Both types wear out on their own schedule, and both land on our Petrie run every week.

Washer Taps and Ceramic Disc Mixers Compared
A washer tap seals with a rubber washer pressing onto a valve seat, while a mixer seals with a ceramic disc cartridge. Knowing which one sits on your sink tells you what the repair involves.
The washer tap
Two handles, hot and cold, and each one needs several full turns to close. The spindle threads down, and a small part called the jumper valve presses the washer down on the seat, closing the flow.
The mixer tap
One lever, usually a quarter turn from cold to hot. The cartridge holds two polished ceramic discs that meet to shut the water off, and there is no washer at all.
When a cartridge wears out, we swap it as a complete unit. The replacement has to match the tap's make and model exactly, since fittings differ. Our tap and toilet plumbing page sets out the full range of this work across the house.

Tap Leaks at the Spout, Handle and Base
The spot where water appears points straight to the failed part. Read the leak before you touch anything.
Drip from the spout
the sealing part has had it. With a washer tap the culprit is the washer or the seat; with a mixer, the cartridge.
Water around the handle
the O-ring or the seal around the spindle has worn, and it leaks while the tap is open.
Wet base or damp patch under the bench
O-rings, a loose connection, or a body cracked through. This one can damage the cabinet, so it should not wait.
Before any repair, the water needs shutting off. A tap fed by an isolation valve under the sink is a quick job. Without one, the stop tap at the water meter closes the supply; turn it clockwise.
Check first that no appliance, such as the hot water system, depends on the meter supply before you close the stop tap. A handle that turns stiffly, even with the tap still sealing, usually means the cartridge or spindle is worn or gritty.

Who May Repair a Tap in Queensland
The QBCC treats one tap job as unregulated: replacing a jumper valve or washer, which anyone with the appropriate knowledge and level of skill may do. The finished job still has to meet the standards, and every other tap repair belongs to a licensed plumber.
Licensed work
putting in a whole new tap counts as licensed work, and the QBCC guide uses that very job as its example. Every other tap repair is minor work for a QBCC licensee, and no permit or Form 4 is needed.
Rentals
under the tenancy rules, the owner or manager keeps the premises in good repair for the whole tenancy, and the tenant reports faults as soon as possible. A leaking tap sits outside the Act's emergency list, which makes the repair routine. If nothing happens, a Notice to remedy breach (Form 11) starts a clock of at least seven days for the manager.

When an Old Tap Is Past Repair in Petrie
The repair-or-replace call turns on the tap type, the part it needs, seat and body condition, and how easily the supply to that tap can be closed off. The price is set by a fixed quote after we've inspected the job, because two taps that look alike can hide very different problems underneath.
The housing stock here spans weatherboard cottages through to 1980s-and-later builds, so one street can carry taps from every era of Australian fitting. A repair makes sense while the body is sound and only a washer, O-ring or cartridge has worn.
A leak that survives new parts, a scored seat, or a badly corroded body means the tap is done, and our tap replacement page covers choosing its successor. For garden and hose taps, see outdoor tap repairs.
One cost note worth knowing: a slow drip can waste thousands of litres, and the owner carries that on the water bill. A dripping cistern is a different fault again, dealt with on our toilet repairs page.

Tap Repair Questions We Get
Call (07) 3523 6484Why does my mixer tap feel stiff to turn?
A stiff lever usually points to wear or grit inside the tap's working parts. We swap the cartridge as a complete unit, matched to the correct model, because sizes and fittings vary.
How much does it cost to fix a leaking tap in Petrie?
The price turns on what sort of tap it is, which part has failed, whether the seat or body is damaged, how well the supply shuts off, and how many taps you book at once. You see the figure as a written quote once the job has been inspected.
Is it worth repairing an old tap in Petrie?
Yes, when the tap's body is still sound and the wear is limited to a washer, an O-ring or a cartridge. Cracks, heavy corrosion, or dripping that continues once new parts are fitted all point to a replacement instead.
How many litres can a dripping tap waste?
Thousands of litres over time, and that loss lands on your water bill. Unitywater's concealed leak adjustment does not cover water lost through a dripping fitting, so the drip is yours until it's fixed.
Will turning the tap off harder stop the drip?
No, forcing the handle down chews the washer and scores the valve seat faster, which makes the next leak worse. Replacing the worn part is the fix, not more pressure on the handle.
